Some Intro :

If we talk about popping, no seasoned anglers who has not ever heard of Carpenter Rods. No wonder, surely, we face the best rods on the market for the practice of these modalities.

Carpenter is a 100% Japanese factory, lead by Kenji Konishi which employed 17 workers, including those who do part-time to supply the Japanese market first and then across the world. The production as you can guess, are clearly inadequate for the demand. This is because, product made in their workshop are completely handmade, very few Japanese brands, in addition to Carpenter, can boast of that.

For this reason, it's rare that dealers have in stock rods, even the best shops in Japan. The few units that reach the stores are deplete quickly, so it is best to order the desired model for some months ahead. Some Japanese, aware of the difficulty in obtaining Carpenter Rods, buy them for auction on e-Bay at prices above the shops. It's happens similarly with the used rods. Rarely sold, and if that is that case, the process is so fast that almost no time to learn. Because of this peculiarity philosophy of production, is normal encounter cases of anglers who have spent nearly a year waiting to get their hands on a particular model of Carpenter Rod. I also manage to get this desire rod by waiting nearly a year with alot of patient and alot of beating heart.

Like another manufacturer, Carpenter classified it's rods by Series. Kenji Konishi, however, is a craftsman who designs each rod type depending on the species you want to capture. In another example of exquisite refinement Japan, choose lures that will best adapt to the characteristics of each rod.

For me, which mostly addict to Giant Trevally, of course will choose GT SERIES of the Carpenter Rod. In GT Series there are 6 categories to harass and beat the GT more bullies. For my second Carpenter Rod, i still pick it from LGM (La Grande Mer) Super Popping model. SP80M. Improved version of SP79M, design for chugger primarily but still can work with heavier stickbait either surface or sinking type. Rated at PE6-8 which just nice enough for my physical & strength. The other thing is the weight, just 380g, so not tiring me by popping for whole day.

Made from Carbon-intensive average elasticity, its blank provides a very precise feeling in the cast and adds a special nerve in the flight with the catch.

At launch, the applied force is transmitted faithfully to the rod, it bends gradually and without unnecessary vibrations to the lure, simply fly to the target. The same principle applies at the time of the sample, since any small action by the angles is transmitted faithfully to the lure.

When the fish is chopped and the party begins, all the blank shows resilience to raise the trophy, making this event a pleasant and easy exercise. Intermediate and experienced anglers, regardless of their physical, can enjoy catching large prey with the rod that transform all violent acts in smooth movements.

Guide to buy GT Rod

One of the most common questions we get from GT anglers is what is the best rod? Well, the simple reality is there is no best rod. What can be said is there are many quality GT rods on the market but this is one form of fishing where getting the right rod is really critical.

So what constitutes the right rod? I would suggest that you need to ensure you get a rod that you can manage well both in terms of casting and fighting a fish. Like with any sport, getting equipment that fits you properly will permit you to use it to the best of your ability. Not doing that may see you unable to get the best out of the equipment.

I suppose I will point out up front that GT rods are all about compromise. A longer rods casts better but a shorter rod is better to fight a fish with. A very stiff rod works poppers well but hurts when you're fighting a fish. A soft tipped rod is good for stickbaits but not as good for poppers and so on.I'd suggest you consider the following when considering the acquisition of a rod:

� Are you looking for a specialised or general GT rod?
� What weight of lure do you want to use?
� How good a caster are you and how far will you need to cast where you are fishing?
� How heavy a rod do you need and what can you actually physically handle in terms of a GT rod?
� Manufacturers� idiosyncrasies
� The most important factor - your budget!

Do I want a Specialised or General Purpose GT Rod?

Not all GT rods are the same nor are they made for the same purpose. At opposite ends of the spectrum would be a light stickbait rod and a stiff heavy rod for huge cup-mouthed chuggers.

Stickbait rods are designed with a light and flexible tip to impart action to a surface stickbait. Currently, there are only two manufacturers that make specialised stickbait rods being Carpenter who was the pioneering company for stickbait rods and Ripple Fisher with the Blue Lagoon and Ultimo offerings respectively. Stickbaits come in both surface and sinking versions and it is really only on surface stickbaits that the specialised stickbait rods becomes necessary. I've said it before and I'll say it again you don't need a stickbait rod for Orion Bigfoots.

Currently, stickbait rods only come up to PE8 weight class (100lb). A stickbait rod needs to have a relatively soft tip and upper section of the blank but need not be progressive beyond that segment although both the current offerings from Carpenter and Ripple tend to be quite progressive.

Specialised heavy chugging rods are at the other end of the spectrum. These generally have a really firm tip which is necessary to work big cup-mouthed poppers. If the tip flexes too much, then the rod becomes inefficient as a heavy chugging tool. Heavy chugging rods are made by most manufacturers of GT rods and come in weight classes up to PE12 (170lb). Examples of specialised heavy chugging rods include Carpenter's SP78UHL, Fisherman's 77 R10L and Patriot Design's Fire Vortex (I am unsure of this model's current status as to whether it is still in production).

The rest of the GT rods I suppose I will describe as general purpose GT rods. I don't really like that term as it seems to infer they're ordinary (and many are anything but ordinary) but I can't think of a more appropriate term. General purposes rods are the most commonly made rods in the industry and are generally more progressive in action through the blank. These rods also tend to be more comfortable to fight a fish with and can be used for all types of lures. They're not really ideal for stickbaits but you will get by with them. As a chugging tool, they're not as efficient as a really stiff tipped specialised chugging rod but will do the job reasonably. Obviously, the bigger the popper, the more you get to the point of saturating the capacity of the rod to work the popper effectively.

I really don't think the manufacturers design these as general purpose rods. These rods are all designed to fish poppers but are simply built on a more progressive blank and to suit more anglers.

If you are only looking to acquire one rod, then I suggest that you should be looking for a general purpose rod that can fish a range of weights and line classes. On the other hand, if your budget is bigger and you are shopping for more rods, then you have the luxury of buying more specialised tools for the lures you want to use.

Weight and Size of Lures to be used

The weight and size of lures you want to use are a critical factor in deciding on the rod you want. Manufacturers all tend to provide guidance in terms of the casting weights of their rods. I strongly suggest you look around the mid-weight of what they claim. For example, if a rod is supposed to be for 150-250g poppers, then think about 200g as being ballpark in staying within the limits of the rod. There are rods out there that are claimed to cast 250g which are groaning under 200g (not to mention the angler!). Stay within the limits of your rod.

Many people want a very wide variance in terms of casting weights which is understandable. I can only say that if this is the case, a rod with a more progressive action will be more forgiving in this regard. An example is a Smith Komodo Dragon which will cast a 100g weight competently but I've used I Cups with it too. It's not happy but will let you get away with it. A Carpenter Wild Violence is also similar in that it can cast lighter lures better than its stable mate, the SP78UHL which is the same weight class but which is designed for huge cup mouthed poppers.

I suppose what I am trying to say is find a rod that suits the weights you want to cast.

How Good a Caster are you and how far do you need to cast?

This is a rather important question and where this becomes a factor is deciding on the length and action of the rod you buy. In general, a longer rod with a more progressive action will be easier to cast. This is excepting the small percentage of people who have a very casting fast action where they can load the faster action rods. Also, a lighter outfit will be easier to cast than a heavier outfit.

Getting good distance is all about matching your outfit properly in terms of the rod, line, lure weight and being able to load the rod effectively.

That said, at the end of the day, the length of the rod is king when it comes to casting distance. GT rods are all about a compromise. What I've always said is that I wish I had a rod that was the Carpenter Long Reef (8'6") when I am casting but which then magically turns into a Carpenter OH55XHS (5'6") when I hook up. Longer rods are great to cast with where as shorter rods are great to fight a fish with. Anyone who has tried to raise a big fish from under the boat with a long rod will know just how back-breaking that can be.

In general, I recommend you look for a rod that is 7'6" to 8' long. A shorter rod will not give you enough distance unless you're a superb caster and a longer rod is going to be difficult to handle when you're hooked up. I'd suggest that if you are a really good caster, look for a rod around 7'6" and if you're not as good a caster, work your way toward 8'. There are a couple of rods around the 8'2" length such as the Ripple Fisher 82LC which are manageable.

There are locations where you do require as much distance as you can get and in this event, you will have no choice but to go to the longer weapons such as Carpenter's Long Reef which is available up to nine feet in length.

The necessary casting distance is a critical factor. There is little more frustrating than finding yourself in the position where the ideal spot seems to be always just out of your reach or where your fishing companions are reaching a spot continuously before you can.

Getting long distance is not simply just about the rod , you can also match your gear and line accordingly. Obviously, PE6 Varivas with a small friction knot on a 130lb mono leader is going to cast a lot better than 130lb Jerry Brown hollow braid attached to a heavy assist cord leader. On the other hand, in a heavy reef strewn location, you will not extract a single fish with PE6. It's all a compromise.

How Heavy a Rod do you need and what can you actually handle?

The weight (as in line class the rod is designed to fish, not mass), needs to be determined by the terrain you're fishing and what you�re actually physically capable of handling.

It is pointless to buy a rod that is beyond your capacity to fish as your primary fishing tool. A rod that is beyond your capacity will simply break you when you're fighting a big fish and I would suggest that you're much better off taking your chances with an outfit you can fish to the limit than a really heavy outfit that you cannot fish to its capacity.

My general recommendation is to go for the lightest outfit you can get away with. I have on numerous occasions seen people fishing outfits which they just can't handle and which just break them when they're hooked onto a decent fish. Just remember that a heavy outfit will not land you a big fish , you need to be able to handle the outfit effectively to be able to land a big fish.

Big heavy outfits have their place but for me, they're a necessity in some locations rather than what I like to fish with. I generally opt for the lightest outfit I can get away with as it is simply more comfortable to fish long periods with. I can cast further, last longer and the fishing is more enjoyable.

Manufacturer's Idiosyncrasies

This is actually a more important factor than many people realise in getting themselves a rod that is right for them. Manufacturers are all different and one manufacturer�s PE12 rod does not necessarily accord with another. For example, a HOT Gipang 77XXH is rated as PE12 and so is a Carpenter SP78UHL. The SP78UHL, however, feels considerably stronger for the same rating and I would suggest to you that the Patriot Design Fire Vortex is stronger again.

A common idiosyncrasy is with regard to butt lengths. Nearly every manufacturer differs here but the butt length on a Shimano Caranx Kaibatsu is some five inches longer than the industry average.

Another is that some manufacturers like to place the reel seat in an up-winding position whereas others like it in a down-winding position.

One that is unique to the manufacturer is Patriot Design using the Fuji Low riders guides rather than the traditional Fuji super ocean guides (MNSG and ICMNSG).

Manufacturer warranties are another idiosyncrasy and vary wildly. Some offer no warranty whatsoever to the opposite end where Ripple Fisher in this country offer their equivalent of the G-Loomis Expediter program.

It pays to do your research and understand what suits you.

Your Budget

Probably the most important factor of all!

GT rods range in price from relatively reasonable to outrageous and I will make the comment that beyond a certain point, spending more does not necessarily mean you get a better rod.

At the budget end of the market, you get rods like the Shimano T-Curve GT Special and at the stratospheric end of the market, a Fisherman with cermet guides will see little change from $2500. That's why I always encourage people to take their time with their purchases and to do their research carefully. It's pretty painful to buy a rod and find out during its first trip that it doesn't suit you at all.

I'll provide a very brief run-down of the market and the brands.

At the entry end of the market, I'll start with the Shimano T-Curve GT Special. There are other rods available around this price range from various small producers but I have no experience with these.Coming back to the GT Special, I've seen this rod as low as below $400 although average retail price seems to be around the $500 mark these days. This is a very capable rod although it is relatively heavy in comparison to some of the premium offerings on the market. The Asian market also sees Shimano offering the Caranx Kaibatsu range of rods and they are also selling for around the $500 mark. This is a big range covering the full spectrum of weights for GT fishing. The Kaibatsus are also a capable rod but as stated earlier, have an unusually long butt length. Any decent rob builder will be able to shorten this easily. These rods will do the job competently.

Moving into the middle part of the market, you have the Daiwa Saltiga range although this really only comprises two rods in the PE8 category , the Muramura 76 and the GT86. These are generally around the $700 mark. Saltiga's are excellent rods and I've never quite understood why they have not produced a heavier GT rod in the range. The GT86 used to be a very popular rod for anglers acquiring their first GT rod. I've always been of the view it is a few inches too long.

A little upmarket from the Saltiga's sees the HOTs and Zenaqs and a new range from an established company (Ripple Fisher), Yamaga Blanks (not blanks though , only rods notwithstanding the name). These are all excellent rods and there is a wide range of rods covering the full gamut of weight classes. Prices will be around $750 to around $950. Yamaga currently only have two PE8 offerings but the range will be widened soon. It is my view that these rods are not in any way inferior to the next category up being premium rods but are priced at a lower level.

Beyond this sees you into the premium end of the market where you will find manufacturers like Smith, Carpenter, Ripple Fisher, Sevenseas, Patriot Design, Fisherman etc. These are all excellent rods that are well constructed and they should be at their prices! The prices also vary quite significantly for reasons which I cannot always understand myself as in general, the components are largely the same (excepting some of the more specialised components used by Fisherman). These rods range in price from below $1000 to over $2500 and at the prices of these rods, it really pays to have done your research as a poor buying decision may end up being a costly one.

Just remember that it is the tradesman and not the tool. The tool of course helps but a capable angler will land the same fish irrespective of whether he is using a $500 T-Curve or a $2,500 Fisherman.

If this is the position you find yourself in, then I probably won't be able to talk you into delaying your buying decision for at least one rod. That said, I really do need to emphasise that if you have the patience, it really pays to do at least a trip first before you rush out and start building up your rod collection. You will be in a much better position to know what you like and what suits you after a trip.

That said, most of you can't wait so if you fall into this category and need to rush out and buy a rod, then I suggest you should probably consider a general purpose rod. The main reason for this is you will almost certainly buy a rod you can handle this way. I have a few suggestions below but please note, these are only intended as examples and are rods that I have used personally. I am not in a position to recommend a rod I have not at least used myself and certainly,, I can't recommend a rod for you without having seen you fishing first. With the rods below though, I have identified rods that the vast majority of anglers will find comfortable to fish with and are rods that can handle both poppers and stickbaits. I still feel the need, however, to say that only the Coral Viper can be considered as decent for stickbaits.

Heavy rods (PE10) : if you need to find yourself a heavy rod to fish PE10 (130lb), an excellent all-rounder for you to consider would be the Smith Komodo Dragon. I have had two of these since their release and I think they are an excellent all round rod. Notwithstanding the manufacturer's recommended figures, I recommend you fish PE10 and lures weights from about 150 -200g. The Komodo will cast heavier and also lighter weights but I think the 150-200g is about ideal. It's a comfortable rod to fight a fish with although at 7'6", it won't be the longest casting rod you find. The only caveat I will make is that you should be sure you can handle a PE10 outfit first.

Mid-heavy rods (PE8-10) : in this weight class, I regard the Ripple Fisher GT79R as an excellent choice. The rod is very comfortable to fish with and while PE10 is pushing it, will handle that weight class with a bit of sensibility on the part of the angler. Casting weights from about 120-160g is about ideal for this rod although it will handle slightly heavier and lighter weights. This rod will pretty much suit anyone fishing for GTs. In fact, I would probably go so far as to say that if you can't handle this rod, you really should be spending more time in the gym first before you go fishing for GTs

Mid weight rods (PE8) : in this weight class, the Carpenter Coral Viper CV79 RF40 is highly recommended - if you can find one. This truly is a personal favourite and is also a favourite of my good friend, Malcolm Crane who is an excellent GT angler. We've found the rod plenty strong enough and both our CVs have knocked over enough respectable fish in the 40-45kg category for us to know they can handle big fish. I love this rod as it is so comfortable to fish with and I've actually fish PE10 pretty hard with it although that is not recommended. This rod is ideal for poppers in the 100-140g range as well as stickbaits from 100-160g.

So who do I buy my rod from?

This is something only you can decide. I do have some strong views on local tackle stores and these vary from one end of the spectrum to the other. Excepting a very small number of stores, I think it is hard to get good advice on this form of fishing. I have been in numerous stores where the salesperson is really spinning a yarn and I'm probably not quite the right person to try to have on!

On the other hand, a store which is prepared to stock a good range of gear and which will go to the effort of arranging for you to cast a range of rods and pop some lures with those rods is serious about their business and in assisting you to get the right rod. Quite frankly, if they go to this effort, they deserve your business. They are also likely to stand behind you in the event of an inexplicable breakage which may be the difference between you getting a replacement or not. If you do get the opportunity to test the rod casting, do one additional tests and that is take your gimbal belt and feel what the rod is like in the gimbal while loaded up. This will give you a good idea on whether the butt is of a suitable length for you and whether you can handle the rod under heavy load.

Coming back to the rods, you of course have the option of buying from abroad which may save you some money but I think this needs to be balanced against the above. As I wrote, only you can make that decision.

So there we are! I hope that the information above will at least prove to be useful in assisting you in buying your first or next GT rod. I have, however, really only scratched the surface in terms of information on rods.

Was tested on my last trip to Rompin. Just landed 3 Sailfish from 25kg to 40kg. Fix this lure by single fisherman spinoza size 10/0 jigging hook. Owesome working performance for sinking stickbait. Weight : 75g. On that trip, i beat another boat (6 boats i think) which using Live Bait but only can landed 1 sailfish overall. Thank for Steven & Sky make me more poisoned by Sailfish popping. We left Kuala Besut Jetty around 10.00am & assume to reach our 1st spot, Dulang around 10 at the night. It's is the long & boring journey which take 12hrs for arrive at our 1st pit stop. I declare to other kaki's to sleep since all of them just chatting around and tieing their leader & prepare their set-up. I just fixed it at home already. So no more tieing on the bot. I need some rest after driving from KL which take 7hrs at 700km. I feel so tired & sick at my back. Sleep might be help.

After wake-up from my "chiky sleepzz", there are still have my kaki's can't manage to sleep. I think they are very exited right know coz this is his 1st trip there. In term i feel better right know, i prepare some of my setup at the front deck.

We reached Dulang Rig around 10.30pm, & as usual before they drop their jig, i have to land my 1st trophy with my Saltiga . Dulang normally home for Bigeye & rainbow runner. But no rainbow runner landed that night. We only landed 12 of Bigeye Jackal 4~7kg. 4 landed by me...

We have to stop our jigging sensation this time coz the super duper Mother of S.E wind hit us at 11.30pm. I & my buddy Prof Chot try to jig, but nothing we can do... We defeat by nature. Our condition at this time just like boarding Northwestern at the Bering Sea in the Deadliest Catch. The different is our bot are so tiny compare their boat which conduct by Captain Sig.hehehhehe

Our tekong proposed we anchor behind the Puteri Dulang Platform for safety since 8 from 10 of our kaki's are trauma & seasick. Cannot stand at all, how to jiggg.. so we manage to sleepzzz & drop the bottom arsenal to do their job....

Our journey continue at 10.00 on the morning but the S.E wind not like to stop hitting us part by part..We moved to Bekok which usually take 4 hours. But in this wavy scenario we reach there about 6 hours. No picture taken at this day since 8 of our mate still trauma & seasick. Rest of them vomit a long day until nothing more to pull out. This time we call "puasa" before the season coz the some of the Vomit Member which we call them Vomittee cannot eat at all. Not just eat, even drink also can't & they just laying on the deck all day...wuarrggg..wuaarrgh.. this time we know who are the fit & tough guy...hehehehehe can't declare you are the Hardcore Anglerzzzz la..

Since our mate laying on deck floor for take their breath, me, Along Crew & Prof Chot manage to apply new tactical of jigging... by sitting la wei... can not stand at all.. wave hitting us about 3m~6m height... it's not choppy anymore..it's crazy wavy & windy.. sometime our bot was hit by crazy wavy which also damage our nasi for lunch.... our nasi become salty porridge..hehehe

All rest of this day we cannot landed any fish, even can't fish anymore... so our tekong board us to our next spot and hope this S.E wind can leave us. As our guess, this wind just following us wherever we go... so no choice of us. Who among us dare to jig in this condition continue our mission.. as usually only me, Along Crew, Prof Chot & Juragan Aris(on/off) love to try.... another mate still laying on the deck floor for ICU condition...hehehehe

After boring on this situation, we ask our Captain boarding to our next pit stop...The GT Triangle (Seligi, Tinggi & Pulai). Another 5hrs to 6hrs needed to reach there on this carzy wavy condition. As usual, only me, Along Crew, Prof Chot & Juragan Aris dare to jigging in this situation. We landed 2 GT, 5kg-8kg and forgot about 5 bigeye 4kg-6kg on jig. I try to cast my Adhek Gecko Popper but the distance we cast only about 20m & can't reach the spot. The wind quite strong this time so i can see my popper fly away from my target cast... how to poppppp... so kept back my popping gear & continue jigging for bigeye...

I cast my jig near the rig structure & jig faster... suddenly i feel shock from fish attacked but the fish more faster to cut away my leader & take home my 7C revolver...tiu na ma.... what the hell of fishhhhh this is... perhaps tenggiri or barracuda... Suddenly Prof Chot who jig beside me got stike from fish.... after fighting around 5 minutes, about 7kg tenggiri lay on his jig & the kevlar assist just broken when the gaff touch it's body... we just lucky at this time...

i lost about 3 numbers of my favorite jig by feeding this tenggiri here & we ask our tekong go to our next spot for ambush the mysterious GT .

We lepak-lepak at nearest "Unjam" for group of cermin sensation. We landed about 130 cermin here with our light arsenal. Some of us still in the deck coz the wavy not stop yet & more crazy than before at this "Unjam". We can see the wave are higher than our boat... at this time our captain show his skill to cleave the crazy wavy.

We just start our jigging session at 5 on that evening. And again we visit our greatest spot hopefully there are GT there... after jigging for few hours, can only landed 3 GT, 7kg to 12kg and some bigeye scale 4kg to 6kg... it's frustrated feeling cause we have to move back tonight slowly to the jetty by stopover at Seligi, Bekok & Dulang again .... Huaarrrr.... It's ok maybe the weather condition not support us this time, so it will be another time to visit.... next year lor...

We reach Bekok at 12pm and jig for few hours before we went to dulang. We landed some Bigeye scale 4kg~6kg here.

We move to dulang for last jigging & bulu casting before we back to the jetty. We reach dulang around 4pm and make our last session jigging & bulu casting. I landed 2 of Rainbow Runner on Bulu 2kg~4kg with 4 occupide strike. No more luck for us on this trip....perhaps next year the weather will compromise with us... good bye oil rig...see you next year..

Drag Setting Recommendation/Suggestion

The drag mechanism on your reel is designed to allow line to peel off from your spool before the weight or fight of a fish causes it to break. A result of this is that very large fish can be subdued on comparatively light line.

The best setting for your drag is to adjust it to one third of the breaking strain of the line in use. To do this, tie the end of your line to the hook on a set of pocket scales or a spring balance. Have someone hold the scales steady while you walk slowly away from them, pointing the rod tip directly at the scales. The measurement obtained is the drag straight off the reel, without any interference from friction over runners, sinker or the water. Adjust the drag until the scales read roughly one third of the breaking strain of you line.

Imagine if you are fishing from the rocks. You are casting a lure on your 10 kg spinning outfit, when suddenly a huge 30 kg fish takes your lure. The fish's immediate reaction is to bolt. With only 3 kg of drag set on your reel (1/3 of the breaking strain of your line), the best thing you can do is to keep the rod tip low and let the line run. The pressure of the hook in the fish's mouth, taking into account the friction and water drag, could be as close to 7 kg, and there is no way that the fish will go too far with the equivalent of 2 house bricks hanging from its jaw. Chances are that the fish will slow down or stop after a run of about 200 m. Most spools, dependant on the thickness of the monofilament that's been reeled on, can hold up to 270 m of line.

As soon as the run stops, get that rod tip up high and put the pressure on. Your job now is to turn the fish's head and begin pumping it in. With the pressure exerted by the rod, you'll be pulling as much as an extra 3 to 4 kg at the top of each pumping stroke. The pump stroke is basically that of pulling on the line on the up-stroke, and reeling the line in on the down-stroke.

Should the fish suddenly bolt again, drop your rod immediately and point the tip of the rod straight down at the fish. If you keep it high, you'll most probably break your line.

After 25 minutes of hard work, you have the fish just 30 m away from the rocks, but now its just hanging there, deep in the water, using the backwash against its flanks to resist your efforts. Every time you pump, line just slips off against the drag and you gain nothing. This is where most anglers make a fatal mistake, by cranking on more drag to haul in the fish. Instead, use your hand against the reel to physically add more pressure on each lifting stroke of your rod. This way, if the fish does really bolt again, your safe knowing that the drag settings are still set right. By altering the angle of the rod and by manually overriding the reel, you've been able to constantly adjust the pressure on the fish, without fiddling with the drag.

In nine out of ten times, you'll be able to land your fish without altering the drag from one third the breaking strain of the line. The only big exception to the rule is a fish taking a great deal of your line, ie more than half of your spool. Due to the basic laws of physics, by the time your reel is half empty of line, the drag has effectively doubled. Therefore, if a big fish runs off more than half your line, it pays to ease off the drag if you want to bring it home. Only when you are down to the last 20-30 metres of line, should you go for broke. Don't tighten the drag to much, but use your palm or finger pressure to try and stop the run. If you have only a few turns of line left on the reel, then should you lock the drag completely. With luck, the fish will stop well short of spooling you. Then it's a long haul bringing in the fish that hopefully wont get away !

Remember, that your line is fatiguing and that a small hook may be straightening slowly during the battle. You should actually be decreasing the pressure as time goes by. A dangerous moment in any battle is the first time the fisherman sees the fish. No matter how tired (or dead) the fish looks, back your drag off slightly when it comes into view. The shorter length of line you are now working with has less elasticity and less room for error. Always be prepared for a last minute burst of action from the fish.

You might be lulled into the belief that the fish has given up the fight and is ready to pack it in. This illusion will be dispelled when the fish comes into view, as it approaches the surface. Usually, the fish will panic, so be ready for the run that follows. You must keep up the pressure on the fish at all times. This will tire it out, and force it to go back along the pull of the line, towards you. (by FishSA)

::Traditionally, we generally put a rod spring balance on the tip of the rod to setup the drag or check the rod deflection load. With this method, a second person was needed to read the scale because the position of the balance is too far from the person holding the rod. Drag setup is especially hard to calculate, and is frequently based on experience of the fisherman and his best instincts.

::The drag checker has made drag measurements possible with the reel and rig set on the fishing rod close to your hands without any line modifications. The drag checker has a night line function that memorizes the measurement value, making it possible for one-man to measure tension and rod deflection load. The drag checker has full functionality to sufficiently obtain the performance of a rod, reel and line.

(1)Drag Measurement
As you know drag prevents the fish from cutting the string. The drag checker makes the drag setup easy and quick.

How to measure
1. Bridge the line from the reel as shown in the picture.
2. Pull the string slowly, straight toward the arrow.
3. Read the needle
* at the start of drag.
* Measurement is easy because the orange needle display remains even after releasing the tension.

(2)Rod Deflection Measurement
This measurement helps you understand how much deflection the rod will have for the amount of given force.

How to measure
1. Set the tackle. Then fix the tip of the line.
2. Install the anti-deflection wire on the main body.
3. Set the drag checker at this position.
4. Bend the rod to the desired deflection to measure.
5. Check the measurement value.
* Be aware that the values change depending on the angle of the rod. When you measure the drag by fixing the drag checker on the line from the rod, the measurement value will differ from the measurement in front of the reel. Be sure to make comparisons.

Sedikit penerangan mengenai kefahaman saya dalam menentukan drag setting bagi peralatan-peralatan sedia ada saya. Yang UTAMA sekali, saya perlu untuk mengetahui kemampuan Rod. Kenapa Rod yang paling saya utamakan, kenapa tidak reel@line ?

Seperti yang saya ketahui, ramai antara pemancing yang menggunakan reel-reel yang canggih manggih yang mana drag setting maksimum yang telah disediakan oleh pembuat adalah di luar kemampuan/ketahanan pemancing itu sendiri. Dan terdapat juga pemancing yang menggunakan line (braided/mono) yang besar(poundage) dengan harapan untuk mengelakkan putus semasa menumpaskan gergasi lautan..kononya. Persoalannya, mampukah anda untuk menahan asakan gergasi lautan yang tidak diketahui saiznya ? Mungkin Reel & line anda mampu, bagaimana dengan Rod anda. Mampukah ia ?

Saya utamakan rod dalam menentukan kekuatan drag yang ingin disetkan pada reel adalah kerana keupayaan rod adalah terbatas. Terdapat pembuat yang telah menetapkan tahap ketahan drag bagi rod-rod yang telah mereka keluarkan. Ianya telah diuji sebelum dipasarkan. Jadi alangkah baiknya kita ikut spesifikasi yang telah ditetapkan oleh pembuat ataupun kurang sedikit dari yang telah ditetapkan oleh pembuat. Ini kerana keupayaan rod menahan drag mengikut sudut perlawanan samada 30deg@45deg@90deg adalah berlainan. Ini tidak terkecuali terhadap jenama-jenama rod yang hebat seperti Fisherman, Smith, Carpenter dll. Semuanya mempunyai tahap maksimum tersendiri dalam menentukan ketahanan menahan drag.

Sebagai contoh : anda menggunakan Stella18000 + Carpenter PE8 dan bertarung dengan mangsa 30kg. Sedia maklum Stella18000 mempunyai drag hampir 25kg. Apakah tahap sesuai untuk menentukan setting drag anda. Takkan anda nak setkan drag sehingga 20kg. kalau anda mampu sekalipun, mampukah CarpenterPE8 untuk menahan drag setting tersebut ? Bagi saya CarpenterPE8 tu boleh patah tiga. Ini kerana anggaran bagi drag setting CarpenterPE8 pada 30deg=12kg, 45deg=10kg & 90deg=6kg. Kalau anda setkan drag pada 15kg pun rod tersebut boleh patah. Untuk situasi ini, drag setting yang saya rekomenkan adalah dalam lingkungan 8kg sahaja. Ini pun boleh patah pinggang di buatnya. Bagaimana dengan ikan 30kg tersebut ? Sebenarnya, tak perlu dikhuatirkan sangat dengan ikan besar ini. Ini kerana kalau ia nak pecut bawa tali sampai habis sekalipun tak apa. Ini bermaksud kita memang tak berupaya untuk menahan lariannya walaupun drag telah di setkan pada setting yang sesuai. Lebih baik hilang line dari patah rod. Line boleh reload, rod nak sambung macam mana ? Biarkan ikan tersebut memecut dahulu, ianya pasti akan berhenti untuk mengumpulkan semula tenaga. Ini lah masa yang perlu di manfaatkan oleh pemancing bagi memalingkan muka ikan tersebut ke arah pemancing dan membuat pump+karauan sedikit demi sedikit. Jika ia lari lagi, biarkan sehingga ianya berhenti semula & ulang pump+karauan. Ikan yang lari dengan membawa beban drag yang telah kita tetapkan tadi, walaupun bersaiz 30kg++ akan penat/letih. Jadi inilah peluang kita untuk mendaratkan ikan tersebut iaitu dengan meletihkan ikan, bukan set drag ke tahap maksimum.

Jangan sesekali tambahkan drag dari yang telah ditetapkan semasa perlawanan bagi menghentikan larian ikan. Ini adalah kesilapan biasa pemancing(termasuk saya) kerana telah huru-hara dikerjakan dek larian pantas ikan yang seolah-olah tak nak berhenti & menyebabkan line di spool hampir habis. Pada masa ini lah biasanya pemancing baru tahu akan tahap kemampuan rod mereka. Reel dah hebat, line dah kuat & shock leader dah bagus tapi dah terlambat sebab rod 1pc dan jadi 3pc. Ini yang selalu terjadi di depan mata saya sendiri bagi pemancing-pemancing hebat tetapi tidak mengetahui secara terperinci tentang ketahanan rod mereka. Terpaksalah jadi penonton je lepas tu...

Bagi saya yang mempunyai saiz badan boleh kata kurus keding (tinggi=168cm, berat=55kg) ni, set drag yang ideal adalah dalam lingkungan 6kg~7kg walaupun pakai Stella20000@Dogfight sekalipun. Itulah kemampuan yang saya dapat tahan dengan fizikal ketinggian 168cm & berat 55kg. Kalau lebih set takut saya jatuh ke laut lak tarik dek ikan. Maklumlah sayang reel+rod kononya, nyawa tak sayang lak.

Sebab itu saya katakan tadi, ketahui tahap kemampuan rod kita dahulu baru boleh setkan drag ke tahap ketahanan badan yang kita mampu. Jangan menyeksa diri sendiri.

Saya tidak ada drag checker, macam mana nak setting drag ?

Bagi diri saya, saya menggunakan penimbang biasa. Caranya setupkan reel & rod anda seperti anda akan bertarung sebentar lagi macam dalam gambar kat bawah ni.

1) Sambungkan line kepada penimbang dan minta kawan2 @ isteri2 @ anak2 (yg mana mampu) tolong pegangkan penimbang yang telah di sambungkan dengan line tadi lebih kurang 3 meter dari jarak anda yang sedang memegang rod sambil posing fighting.

2)Turunkan hujung rod selari dengan penimbang dan angkat perlahan-lahan rod sehingga mencapai anggaran sudut 30deg(bagi saya-takut rod patah).

3)Setkan sedikit demi sedikit reel drag anda dan ulang langkah no.2 serta baca bacaan pada penimbang sehingga mencapai tahap yang anda inginkan.Anda akan dapati jika drag set anda masih tidak mencapai tahap yang anda kehendaki, line akan keluar dari spool. Ulang langkah tersebut sehingga line anda keluar pada tahap yang minimum. Jika line anda hanya keluar pada kadar yang lebih pada bacaan penimbang & tahap yang anda kehendaki, bermakna drag set anda telah terlebih dan harus release sedikit sehingga mencapai yang anda kehendaki.

Defeat at 06 Reef & Russian Wreck

This is my 2nd time visiting Penang Russian Wreck. So I've make some improvement for my set-up early. I left my house 8.00am in the morning Jun18,09 straight to Damansara for pick-up my buddy, the Champ Chubby Prince. Arrrgh, traffic jam along the way there... can i arrive till afternoon through this traffic...hmmmm. Arrival at Prince house around 9.30am. I have to move faster to arrive at the jetty around 1pm. Gentleman...Start your engine....Let's race.

Just like before kick-off start

We arrive at the jetty at 1.30pm, and all our buddies were load their stuff on the boat. Just waiting for us. Sorry bro.. so many traffic problem & so many road block too....

Captain : It's ok... but both of you must load all the ice cube...hehe3..

WR water condition

We arrive at Russian Wreck around 5.00pm, after waiting till 9.00pm, we only land a couple of fish... where the hell of all this fish......hmmmm. Boring for waiting , our Captain offer cruising about 20nm to 06Reef. Ding-dong-ding-dong discussion among otai2, we agreed to moved there. My new journey begin.

Arrival at 06Reef, all of us start using bulu's for casting season. Just after 4 cast, our bulu's was attack by group of bigeye... 1 by 1, the bigeye landed by bulu's.... no photos cause all excited for casting lesen... me with my PE1.8 custom EA by kenny landed 3 of bigeye just in 10 minutes...hehe. After that just sleeping season for me cause all of them do bottom fishing.....

Early in the morning our boat happening again when group of tenggiri start attacking bulu's.... casting mambong lure was not attractive anymore to this tenggiri. It's just only attacking bulu's lure....

I'm jigging alone beside the boat also can't attract this all of fish...jigging for nothing...hmmm, walaweh... i got kerapu...oh Nooooo... it's only "karangpu" la... shit... lost my new 150g 7C revolver....

I keep back my jigging gear in cabin road holder & come back for casting bulu accompanies Prince at the back..... after Prince release the line around 50m to 60m, he make 1 smooth jerk spin. Prince : I think some thing holding my bulu la.... big cupak or Gt maybe.....

After fighting for 5min, the golden shine approach for the water... walaweh...you must kidding me la... can't do like that la bro, Angchor attacked bulu ka.... tiu na seng... 1st time in this GT Challenger for this size of Golden Snapper landed by bulu... please don't do it again hehe.. nanti orang marah ooo

Buy this rod since 2006, 2" top blank broken, but repaired. My favorite light duty rod. Using this rod for casting the powerful of "Angchor~Golden Snapper" at Sealion Saltwater Pay Pond 1. Paired with Shimano Biomaster 2500. Although this rod is light, it's able to pump out 4kg~5kg Angchor & Grouper by my experiences at Sealion Saltwater Pay Pond. Never disappointed me when it in action. Just love it.....

The lure moved agonizingly in big bubbles, and stopped. Then, a huge shadow seemed to graze underneath. Next moment, the lure vanished from the sea surface. Before a strong shock ran on my rod, my body was already responding. PE10 started to go out from the reel of 15kg drag so easily. I tried to wind the reel, holding my arm close to my chest, but it wont roll, never.

Used for connecting braided line to the leader. This is a streamlined connection perfect for jigging and popper casting. It is very strong, I have never seen or heard of this connection breaking so I recommend it. It takes a few minutes to tie but practise makes perfect.

these are the basic tools needed for the PR connection - braid scissors, lighter and PR bobbin and holder.

the PR bobbin has a steel pin which serves as an additional weight. Insert the pin into the bobbin if you are splicing (serving) braid 50lb and above. Wrap a little duct tape around the bobbin to help hold the braid end.

I've used 80lb colored braid and 200lb leader so the connection can easily be seen.

thread the end of the braid throught the bobbin holder, wrap it around the bobbin for 10 -12 turns then wrap it around the bobbin arm 4 - 6 turns. Hold the braid tag together with the leader tag, wrap them together around your fingers to secure.

begin by making spirals for about 10cms. You are winding away from the leader tag end.

spiral wrap for 10cm, then spin (serve) tight wraps for 1cm.

now reverse the direction and spin tight close wraps. Allow the tip of the holder to contact the leader, this ensures tight wraps. If the line comes out too freely, the tip will not contact the leader as there is not enough tension. Add more tension with another 1 or 2 turns around the bobbin arm. You are wrapping back towards the leader tag end.

continue spinning tight wraps along the leader.

with the other hand, remove braid from the bobbin and holder.

while still pinching down, tie a half hitch to lock in the last wrap.

continue to add half hitches taking care to alternate the direction of each half hitch, this serves to lock each half hitch in place. After about 1cm of half hitches cut the leader leaving a 3 - 4 mm tag.

use a lighter with a small flame to ball the tag end. This is a most critical procedure as the flame will easily damage the braid so protect the braid with your finger tips and finger nails.

add another half hitch or 2 up to the tag ball.

continue alternating half hitches along the braided line for 1cm to provide a ramp to the leader tag.

close off the half hitches by a 5 - 6 wraps back toward the knot

pull up the braid tag to terminate the knot

cut braid tag close

completed PR knot, streamlined and very strong. The leader used here is 200lb mono for the benefit of these images. I normally don't use such heavy mono leaders.

I get this trip slot when Sham, my buddy from Kedah offer to me 2 month before. I just confirm to him for joining it when his first call. Actually, for joining this trip i want to improve my popping & jigging skill in deep water ( 60mtr~90mtr).

Take 24 hours from jeti Kuala Besut Terengganu to get the last Oil Rig (Pulai) at ZEE border of Indonesian water. This trip need more patient & tough mind. There are no bottom fishing apply in this trip. Fully popping & jigging. So there are no Gred A fish caught like snapper & grouper. This boat can loaded 12 anglers + 1 tekong & 3 boatman. Triple deck for sleep & rest, toilet. Of course there are sonar, fish finder, GPS & satellite phone equip in this boat. No drop anchor cause the boat was drifting when fishing.

Summary :

For this trip we have to standby our tackle properly cause there are so many Big & powerful GT there. I just loose 200mtr my line twice from my Saltiga Game. Shame on me for under estimate. Make sure bring 2 set of jigging & 2 set of popping tackle for trip unless you want to loose your time reloaded your line to reel.
